Plants make their own family of waxy compounds called sterols, or phytosterols. Beta-sitosterol is the most common of them in the human diet.
Food sources
Beta-sitosterol is found in nuts, seeds, avocado, whole grains, pulses and vegetable oils such as rice bran, corn and sunflower oil. A typical Indian vegetarian diet already provides some every day.
How it is made for supplements
Supplement beta-sitosterol is usually extracted from vegetable oils or from tall oil, a by-product of pine pulp. It is a white, waxy powder.
Single ingredient or "sterol complex"?
Some labels list beta-sitosterol alone, others a mixed plant-sterol complex with campesterol and stigmasterol. Check which, and the amount of beta-sitosterol per serving.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
- An FSSAI licence number and the veg/non-veg mark on the pack
