Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a flowering plant in the pea family, native to northern China and Mongolia. Its root, known as huang qi, appears in Chinese herbal texts that are around 2,000 years old.
From root to capsule
The root is harvested after several years of growth, dried and sliced. Supplements use either the powdered root or a concentrated extract. A 10:1 extract is made from about ten parts of dried root for each part of finished extract.
Root powder or extract?
A root powder lists the weight of whole dried root. An extract lists the weight of concentrated extract, often with its ratio. The two numbers are not directly comparable, so read which one a label gives.
