Citrus bergamot and olive leaf are two plant ingredients that now appear together on supplement labels. This guide explains what each one is, how to read the numbers on the Zespo Citrus Bergamot 1,200 mg with Olive Leaf label, and what to check on any similar product.
What is citrus bergamot?
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a citrus fruit that is best known for the aroma of its peel. In a capsule, it appears as a fruit extract, which means the fruit has been processed and concentrated into a powder. On a label it is usually listed as "Citrus Bergamot (Fruit Extract)" with an amount in milligrams.
What is olive leaf powder?
Olive leaf powder comes from the leaves of the olive tree (Olea europaea). The leaves are dried and ground. A "powder" is the plain ground leaf, while an "extract" is a concentrated form that often states a standardised percentage of a marker compound. If a label says only "Olive Leaf Powder", it is the ground leaf and no marker percentage should be expected.
How to read this label
The Supplement Facts panel on this product lists a serving size of 2 capsules and 45 servings per container. Each serving contains 800 mg of Citrus Bergamot (fruit extract) and 400 mg of Olive Leaf Powder, which adds up to 1,200 mg per serving. The daily value is not established for either ingredient, so the %DV column shows two asterisks. The other ingredient listed is the vegetarian capsule shell (vegetable cellulose).
Per serving or per capsule?
The most common label mistake is comparing a per-capsule number with a per-serving number. Here the 1,200 mg figure is for two capsules together. Always check the serving size line first, then divide if you want a per-capsule figure: 600 mg per capsule in total, made up of 400 mg of bergamot extract and 200 mg of olive leaf powder.
