The olive tree (Olea europaea) gives us olives and olive oil, but its leaves have also been brewed as tea around the Mediterranean for centuries. Today they are dried and extracted for supplements.
What is oleuropein?
Oleuropein is a natural compound that gives olive leaves and unripe olives their bitter taste. When olives are cured or processed, part of it breaks down into hydroxytyrosol.
What does "standardised to 20% oleuropein" mean?
A standardised extract guarantees a minimum amount of a marker compound. 500 mg of an extract standardised to 20% oleuropein contains about 100 mg of oleuropein. A plain leaf powder has no guaranteed figure, so the two are not directly comparable.
