Tart cherries, also called sour cherries, are Prunus cerasus, a different species from the sweet cherries (Prunus avium) eaten as fruit. The best-known variety is Montmorency, grown widely in the United States and Europe and usually dried, frozen or juiced because it is too sour to eat fresh in quantity.
What does 10:1 mean?
A 10:1 tart cherry extract is made from about ten parts of cherry for each part of finished extract, concentrating the fruit's natural colour and compounds into a small amount of powder.
Capsules or powder?
Tart cherry extract is sold as capsules for a fixed amount per serving, or as a powder to mix into drinks. Zespo also offers a tart cherry extract powder.
