Beetroot is naturally rich in dietary nitrate, a compound also found in leafy greens such as spinach and rocket. Supplements based on beetroot come in two main kinds, and their labels measure different things.
Plain beet root extract
A plain extract lists the weight of concentrated beet root, often with an extract ratio such as 10:1. It tells you how much beet root went in, not how much nitrate is present. Read our guide to 10:1 beet root extract.
Beetroot nitrate
A nitrate-standardised product guarantees a stated amount of nitrate per serving. This makes it easier to compare between brands, because the active content is specified.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
- An FSSAI licence number and the veg/non-veg mark on the pack
