Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, formerly Cimicifuga racemosa) is a tall plant in the buttercup family that grows in the shaded woodlands of eastern North America. Its dark, knotted root and rhizome have a long history of use among Native American peoples.
On the label
Black cohosh supplements use the root and rhizome, as a powder or as an extract, often standardised to a percentage of natural compounds called triterpene glycosides. Check the botanical name, the plant part and the amount per serving.
Who should check first
Black cohosh is not suitable for everyone. Speak to a doctor before use if you are pregnant, nursing, take regular medication or have any liver condition.
