Alpha-ketoglutarate, often shortened to AKG, is a small organic molecule that the body makes in every cell as part of the citric acid cycle, the series of reactions cells use to turn food into usable energy.
What is Ca-AKG?
On its own, AKG is an acid. Supplements usually bind it to a mineral to make a stable salt. Ca-AKG is the calcium salt, so each tablet supplies both alpha-ketoglutarate and a small amount of calcium.
Reading the label
A Ca-AKG label normally lists the weight of the calcium alpha-ketoglutarate compound per serving. Some labels also list the calcium it provides. Compare products on the same basis, and note whether the product is a tablet or a capsule.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
- An FSSAI licence number and the veg/non-veg mark on the pack
