The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulates nutraceuticals and dietary supplements in India. Every product must carry the manufacturer's or brand owner's 14-digit FSSAI licence or registration number, usually beside the FSSAI logo on the pack.
Licence vs registration
Small food businesses hold a basic registration. Larger businesses hold a State or Central licence, depending on their size and the scope of their operations. Brand owners selling across many states commonly hold a Central licence.
How to verify a number
- Go to the FSSAI FoSCoS website.
- Choose the option to search for a licence or registration (FBO search).
- Enter the 14-digit number from the pack.
- Check that the business name matches and the licence is active and valid.
What else to look for
Indian nutraceutical labels must also show the veg/non-veg mark and the statement that the product is not for medicinal use.
