Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that grows in the forests of central and southern India, Africa and Australia. In Hindi it is called gurmar, and it appears in Ayurvedic texts.
A plant that changes taste
Gymnema leaves contain natural compounds called gymnemic acids. If you chew a fresh leaf, sweet foods eaten soon after taste noticeably less sweet for a while, because these compounds briefly occupy the sweet-taste receptors on the tongue.
On the label
Gymnema supplements list either leaf powder or a leaf extract standardised to a percentage of gymnemic acids, often 25% or more. Check which, and the amount per serving.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
- An FSSAI licence number and the veg/non-veg mark on the pack
