Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein (a protein with sugar chains attached) that binds iron. It is found in milk, and in especially high amounts in colostrum, the first milk produced after birth. Its name combines lacto (milk) and ferrin (iron).
Where does supplement lactoferrin come from?
Supplement lactoferrin is separated from cow's milk or whey using gentle filtration. Because it comes from milk, it fits a lacto-vegetarian diet but is not vegan, and it may not suit people with a milk-protein allergy.
On the label
Labels list lactoferrin in milligrams per serving and sometimes its purity, for example 90% or 95%.
