Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom that grows on hardwood trees in Asia, Europe and North America. Instead of a cap, it forms a cascade of soft white spines, which gives it its name. In Japan it is called yamabushitake.
Fruiting body vs mycelium
The fruiting body is the visible mushroom. The mycelium is the root-like network that grows through wood or a grain substrate. Supplements may use either or both, and a good label says which.
Extract ratios
Mushroom extracts are often described with ratios such as 10:1, meaning about ten parts dried mushroom went into one part extract. Some labels instead state beta-glucan content.
