Magnesium in supplements is always bound to another molecule, and that partner changes how much of the weight is actually magnesium. This is why two labels with the same "mg" figure can deliver very different amounts.
What is magnesium L-threonate?
It is magnesium combined with L-threonic acid, a compound formed when vitamin C (ascorbic acid) breaks down. It was developed by researchers in the United States in the 2000s.
Elemental magnesium by form
| Form | Approx. elemental magnesium |
|---|---|
| Magnesium oxide | about 60% |
| Magnesium citrate | about 16% |
| Magnesium glycinate | about 14% |
| Magnesium L-threonate | about 7% |
So 2,000 mg of magnesium L-threonate provides roughly 144 mg of elemental magnesium. When you compare products, look for the elemental figure on the label.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
- An FSSAI licence number and the veg/non-veg mark on the pack
