Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. The body makes more of it in darkness and less in bright light, which is why its levels follow the daily cycle of night and day. Small amounts are also found in foods such as tart cherries, tomatoes and some nuts.
How is supplement melatonin made?
Supplement melatonin is made synthetically in a laboratory, not extracted from animals, so it is generally suitable for vegetarians. Check the veg mark on the pack.
Reading the dose
Labels list melatonin in milligrams per serving. Products range widely, from under 1 mg to 10 mg, so always check the strength and follow the label.
Melatonin is not suitable for everyone, including children, pregnant or nursing women and people taking medication. Speak to a doctor before use.
