Policosanol is a natural mixture of long-chain alcohols extracted from plant waxes. The best-known source is the waxy coating on sugarcane leaves and stems; other sources include rice bran, wheat germ and beeswax.
What is in policosanol?
The main component is octacosanol, an alcohol with a 28-carbon chain, followed by triacontanol and hexacosanol. The exact mix depends on the source.
Why the source matters
Sugarcane policosanol and rice-bran or beeswax policosanol have different compositions. A good label names the source and the policosanol amount per serving, often 10 or 20 mg.
What to check before you buy

- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
