Resveratrol Explained: Grapes, Japanese Knotweed and the "Trans" Form

Resveratrol is a natural plant compound, a polyphenol, that some plants produce in response to stress such as fungal attack or strong sunlight. It is best known from the skins of red grapes.

Where does supplement resveratrol come from?

Grapes, berries and peanuts contain only small amounts. Most supplement resveratrol is extracted from the roots of Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), a fast-growing plant that is a far richer source.

What does "trans" mean?

Resveratrol exists in two mirror-like shapes, trans and cis. Trans-resveratrol is the more stable form and the one most labels specify, often with a purity such as 98%. A label that just says "resveratrol" or "knotweed extract" may contain less.
