Wheatgrass is the young grass of the common wheat plant (Triticum aestivum), harvested a few weeks after sprouting and before the grain forms. It has a fresh, grassy flavour and a deep green colour from its chlorophyll.
How is wheatgrass powder made?
The young blades are cut, washed, dried at low temperature and milled into a fine powder. Some products are made from juiced wheatgrass that is then dried, which gives a more concentrated powder.
How to use it
Mix the serving size stated on the pack into water, juice, a smoothie or buttermilk. Start with a smaller amount if you are new to the taste. Because it is harvested before the grain forms, wheatgrass is generally considered free of gluten grain, but check the label if you need certified gluten-free.
What to check before you buy
- The amount of each ingredient per serving, not just per capsule
- How many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the pack
- Whether any ingredient sits inside an undisclosed "proprietary blend"
